Details: Artistic Director Andrus Madsen plays a program of 17th-century South German and Austrian keyboard music on harpsichord and on South Church's splendid 1896 Casavant organ. The program will focus on Johann Pachelbel, Johann Jakob Froberger, Johann Kaspar Kerll and Georg Muffat, all composers whose music leans heavily toward expression and color. While a Bach Chorale Prelude might come across like an extraordinarily well-crafted sermon, a Pachelbel work feels more like the intimate conversation one might have at night alone with a dearest friend. This is music intimately expressing the deepest joy, the most profound sadness, and all varieties of tenderness.
Andrus Madsen is an active performer on the organ, harpsichord, clavichord, and fortepiano. He is the founding director of Newton Baroque and also performs with the Boston-based vocal ensemble Exsultemus. Madsen is known for his eloquent Baroque-style improvisation and for his inventive programming, striving to bridge the barriers between audience and performers. He holds a doctorate in harpsichord performance and literature from the Eastman School of Music and serves as music director at several churches and synagogues in the greater Boston area; he also teaches privately.
