Variations on America: Complete works of Charles Ives for pipe organ to be performed in historic concert

Brewster, NY: Today, the Putnam Chorale in conjunction with organist Zacchaeus Lock announced the joint concert Variations on America, to be held at the First United Methodist Church of Brewster, NY, on Sunday, July 2, 2023, at 4pm.
The concert will feature patriotic anthems and music by American composers of all sorts, concluding with an historic performance of the complete compositions of Charles Ives for solo pipe organ.

The Methodist Church in Brewster is historically relevant as it was the venue where Charles Ives himself first performed his "Variations on America", his most famous composition for the pipe organ, in 1892. Although the instrument Ives performed on has not survived to the present day, performer Zacchaeus Lock says "just sharing the same space he played in is incredible, I can feel the presence of those concertgoers from over a century ago."

Charles Ives, born and raised in Danbury, CT, worked in insurance; today, however, he is most well known for his musical composition, which was groundbreaking and ahead of its time in many ways. Ives studied the organ as a child and played in churches all over the area—his compositions for organ came relatively early in his development, more approachable to a general audience than some of his later compositions.
